Keynote Topic: "HDTV VFX for Film and Video"
Steve Wright (left), Technical Director, Cinesite, film effects division of Kodak
author of the Focal Press book "Digital Compositing for Film & Video"

HDTV is rapidly becoming a very important player in visual effects for both broadcast television and feature films. While most of what we see broadcast on TV is still "Standard Definition," behind the scenes, most shows being delivered to the networks today are HD -- which are then downconverted for broadcast. This way, they will be HD-compliant when their shows later hit syndication -- a time when HD is expected to be the main broadcast format. Beyond the famous example of Star Wars II, some feature films are using HD for all or part of their films for theatrical release. Unfortunately, this often includes the effects shots. There are also issues of multi-format compatibility as well as the recent realization of the importance of the 24P master. Working in HD for visual effects introduces a host of issues that the informed digital effects artist and producer will want to be aware of.
